Planets, Signs, & Careers

Planets

In astrology, the planets are the primary focus of study. While the signs are usually much easier to follow than planetary positions in the natal chart, it is absolutely vital to understand that the planets' positions mean EVERYTHING.

When it comes to careers, all of the planets have an influence.  Each planet represents our human urges and the signs represent the nature of our urges.  Along with the sign, the aspects and house placements in the natal chart represents the way our energies will express.  All of these aspects of astrology will influence our job/career choices in life.

In the following descriptions I will be explaining how each planet plays a role in our career choices.  I will also explain how other parts of our natal chart, such as the natal houses, influence our job/career choices.  Because this website focuses on zodiac signs, I will be describing how each planet in sign will influence us. Note: Each sign has its own ruling planet. Aries and Scorpio are ruled by Mars (Scorpio is also ruled by Pluto). Taurus and Libra are ruled by Venus. Gemini and Virgo are ruled by Mercury. Sagittarius and Pisces are ruled by Jupiter (Pisces is also ruled by Neptune). Capricorn and Aquarius are ruled by Saturn (Aquarius is also ruled by Uranus).  The ruling planet and its OWN position in the natal chart should also be examined. Click one of the planets below.

The Sun

The sun is considered the planet of the ego in astrology.  It influences our level of confidence, our sense of identity, and our self-image.  The sun will represent everything we are proud of in life.  The sun sign will show us the nature of our pride and what we need in our lives in order to feel content.  The sun also represents our stage presence.

Because our egos and identities are a large part of our lives, it will influence what jobs/careers we choose. Whether we feel confident in certain careers or whether we feel more insecure in such careers will be determined by the sun. The following descriptions will shed light on how such natives may approach careers in their life and what careers may be more suitable for them.

When the sun is dignified, this reflects a native with a stronger ego.  When the sun is debilitated, this reflects a native with a weaker ego.  The stronger our ego, the more confident we feel in whatever career/job we choose.  The weaker our ego, the less sure we are of our choices, that includes our career choices. The stronger the ego, the more admiration and recognition the native needs. The weaker the ego, the less admiration and recognition the native needs.

Sun in Aries: Sun in Aries natives are action-oriented and attention-loving.  They are opportunists who will jump on any opportunity to be more successful and/or gain more recognition.  Even if others aren't willing to give them job opportunities, they will always seek to make business opportunities for themselves. Aries is a cardinal sign, which means the pride of a sun in Aries native will not allow them to feel defeated.  They will start their own businesses if they have to!  These natives can do any job they put their minds to because of their go-getting personalities. They may be competitive when it comes to opportunities, but usually this competitive streak is done honorably (unless other energies in the chart conflict). They should go for jobs in which they can put their action-oriented personalities to use.  Firefighting, police work, or even sports may be good for them.  They may enjoy starting new businesses, too. This will give them much purpose in life.  Sun is exalted in Aries, which means these natives have a stronger ego.  They hardly ever feel ashamed of who they are and what they do.

Sun in Taurus: Sun in Taurus natives are security-oriented and pleasure-seeking.  They may be slow to take on new opportunities as a result, but they last a long time in any job or career they take on.  Taurus is a fixed sign, which means they represent stability. No matter how ambitious or creative they are in their endeavors, their jobs must offer stability. These natives want a career that will be with them forever.  These natives also need to work jobs they truly love.  Working a job just for the money is okay, but they will not be happy unless they really love what they do.  These natives are very creative and they may have many creative ways of developing careers or making money. Jobs that may put their creativity to use could involve design or decoration of some sort.  They may also have a strong connection to music. They should definitely go for jobs involving finance, home ownership, retail, or marketing.  These natives usually are very good at handling money. These natives may also do well with professions involving nature such as gardening/farming or animal care.  Professions involving ground work such as mining or archaeology may also be good for them.

Sun in Gemini: These natives are activity-oriented, with a strong need to be involved with new things in life.  They are not always the most career-focused because they want to try new things all the time.  The natives have a tendency to take on jobs simply out of curiosity (or because everyone else around them are doing it). They may do well in jobs that give them a chance to be versatile such as the acting professions or teaching professions.  Because they have a natural curiosity for new things, they may enjoy working with media and news outlets.  These natives tend to be interested in discussing their ideas or opinions as well. They may do well as comedians or as television personalities.

Sun in Cancer: The natives with this position are family-oriented, which means many of them may spend a lot of their time providing and caring for their families.  It is their most important job.  Of course, they still do need security in their lives and so they do take on jobs in the outside world.  These natives have more sensitive egos.  They may not feel happy in jobs that have a stressful/critical atmosphere.  They need a job where they can be as creative and flexible as they want to be.  They may prefer to start their own businesses.  They may do well in professions that involve caring for people or animals.  Since the natives are creative, they may enjoy jobs that involve design or decoration. But more importantly, they want to feel proud of whatever they accomplish.  This means that whatever job/career they take on, they will carry themselves with dignity and pride.  The natives are natural born leaders. Psychology may be a profession they should look into.  Or if they want to translate their "fix it" mentality into something more physical, they may enjoy carpentry, car mechanics, or plumbing.

Sun in Libra: These natives are diplomatic, fair, and typically peace-loving.  They want a balanced life, so they do not want a job that requires them to work long hours without any time for fun.  They have a tendency to be judgemental, so they are actually quite particular about the jobs they desire. They may be more concerned about their social life over their career life.  Because of this, they want jobs that will sustain their social reputation.  They may feel ashamed working at jobs that are socially humiliating (depending on how old they are).  Jobs that may be good for them could include office jobs because these natives are really cooperative and reasonable.  They have a creative streak, so they may excel in various artistic professions.  They are especially good at organizing gatherings and/or functions, so party planning, wedding planning, or event planning could be good avenues for them.  Because of their love of peace, perhaps long term professions that encourage serenity and peace could be good for them.  Studying the art of Yoga may be an ideal profession for them. The natives are quite fair and justice-oriented, so jobs involving law will be attractive to them. They may want to be an ambassador/diplomat. The sun is falling in Libra, which means the natives have a weaker ego.  It is hard for them to sustain their inner pride and dignity.  They may go through boughts of shame or humiliation often in their life.

Sun in Scorpio: These natives are interested in having personal power and control in their lives.  Their will-power pushes them to do whatever it takes to succeed in this regard.  They may find themselves in dangerous job positions.  They naturally enjoy living life on the edge.  Jobs that may be best for them should be exciting (but not illegal).  Police work, firefighting, construction work, truck driving, or even extreme sports may be perfect jobs for them.  Because they are power-oriented, jobs involving politics or law may be good for them. They have a lot of sexual charisma which can be useful for any career/job.  Performance art may be in their favor because of their dynamic passion.  They are good at finding resources so jobs involving mining or archaeology may be perfect jobs for them.

However, they do not mind working temporary jobs to help them along.  They are practical, after all.  They are focused and ambitious as well. This means they need a job that will be stable, but still guarentees a chance to advance.  Jobs that leave them feeling stagnant will leave them very unhappy.  They need a job in which they can gain respect and/or leadership.  Perhaps working in a corporate business would be suitable for them.  They are always willing to start from the bottom and work their way up, so going for management positions are good ways for them to start learning to be effective leaders.  These natives are all about structure and order, so they may be drawn to political professions or any job/career involving law.  These natives may also be drawn to jobs involving physical structure such as construction work, carpentry, or plumbing.  Because Capricorn is an earth sign, they have a natural affinity with ground resources.  Oil or other mining industries and archaeology may be a few of the professions they might enjoy.

Sun in Aquarius: Sun in Aquarius natives are unique from all other sun sign natives.  They are the least concerned with admiration or personal recognition. The sun is considered in detriment in Aquarius for this very reason.  Yet, they do HAVE pride even if they do not have a strong need to feed their egos.  The natives are simply more concerned about being unique individuals rather than being respected by others.  This will also reflect in their job/career options.  These natives tend to be quite unconventional (even rebellious) so they may be attracted to jobs that their parents/families do not agree with.  Or they may be attracted to jobs that are not socially acceptable to those in their peer group.  They tend to have an unconventional approach to such careers, preferring to use their own independent methods of doing things.  They may enjoy being entrepreneurs or inventors because of this innovative streak.  The science professions may be of interest to these natives. The career world is not only influenced by the planets in signs, but there are also various houses that can influence our career choices.

The 1st house represents our social identity and presentation. Any planets here will influence the way we present ourselves to others and it will influence the job opportunities that may come our way.

The 2nd house represents money and posession; how we manage and collect.  The planets in this house will show the native how they make money and what jobs they may choose to make money from.

The 3rd house represents our mentality, level of intelligence, and communication.  Any planets in this house will influence our level of education and the skills we may be able to develop from what we have learned. This house will also influence how we network with those in our environment.

The 6th house is one of the most important houses, as it is the house of work/service.  The planets in this house will show the native the kind of work/tasks they will be attracted to.

The 7th house is the house of cooperation and partners.  How we work with others will be influenced by the planets in this house.

The 8th house is the house of joint resources, inheritances, and business.  They way we handle business here will be influenced by any planet that is present in this house.

The 10th house is THE most important house when determing our career choices (because it is the house of careers and prestige).  Any planets here will highly influence our career choices and social status.

The 11th house is the house of hopes, dreams, organizations, who we network with, and causes.  Our life goals will be influenced by any planet present in this house, as well as the kind of organizations we work for.

Note: The lunar nodes, south node and north node, will also influence our career choices. The south node represents our natural abilities so we may be drawn to careers involving that nodal plane. However, we may not find meaning in such jobs/careers.  The north node may be less attractive to us, so we may not appreciate careers involving this plane until much later in life.  Developing a career that offers both "the old and new" will help us to feel more fulfilled in life.  The north node is exalted in Gemini, falling in Sagittarius.  The south node is exalted in Sagittarius, falling in Gemini.
