Behind The Sign
The story behind the scales in astrology is different from any of the other signs because it first became identified as a sign by the Romans, rather than the Greeks. The Romans honored this constellation more than all the others. The Roman writer Manilius described Libra as a sign "in which the seasons are balanced, and the hours of night and day match each other", referring to the autumn equinox. This is the only sign in the zodiac that represents an inanimate object. It was once affiliated with one of the claws of Scorpius. Later, it was seen as the "scales of justice" held by the Virgo maiden Dike or Astraeia (the goddess of justice), which is the constellation right before it. Unfortunately, when or why this sign has been represented as a zodiac sign all its own is historically unknown.
Scales can be represented in a variety of different ways. We may have scales in our heads, in which we "weigh" things according to our own values. We may also have scales in the form of data, like what is seen on a color scale. The weighing scale may have possibly been inspired by both ideas. The weighing scale is a measuring tool made to weigh the weight or mass of an object against another object in order to determine differences (or similarities) in data. In ancient times, these differences usually determined the value of objects when bartering or trading in markets. In many cultures, the scales have been affiliated with justice (due to their connection with Justitia, the Roman goddess of Justice). In the past, scales would usually be designed with one "plate" on one side, and another on the other side. Today, most scales are electronic and the mass or weight is digitally calculated.
