Behind the Sign
The story behind the sign of the bull can be seen from various points of view. Some people see the story of Zeus and his infatuation with the Phoenician Europa as the beginning of this story. In this story, Zeus turned himself into a white bull who Europa found to be gentle and kind. He would carry Europa across the sea and played with her on the beach to strengthen their bond. Of course, to some this does not explain how the bull became a constellation in the heavens.
Another story came from the Scriptures of Delphi, where there was a terrifying bull who raged upon a nearby town. Persephone, the spring goddess, sees him trampling the flowers and goes over to him to calm him. Persephone teaches him patience and also teaches him how to channel his strength appropriately. When Persephone is on land during the spring, she rides this bull through her field of flowers. When she returns to Hades, the bull (named Cerus) returns to the sky.
Scientifically, the bull is the male form of cattle. They are considered fearsome and volatile to many people who encounter him. Naturally, the cow, which is the female form of cattle is considered more calm and serene...until you bother her calf. Despite the cattle's reputation for being temperamental, they simply enjoy peace. They are security-oriented and they do not do well when their environment changes too drastically.
