Behind the Sign
The story of the crab came from the story of Heracles and the trials that he went through because of his immortal father, Zeus, who had an affair with Hercules's mortal mother. This ended up enraging Zeus's immortal wife, Hera, thus she put Heracles through many trials as a result. The name of the story was "The Twelve Labours of Heracles (Hercules)", but unfortunately the crab's role in this story was not major. The fight was between Heracles and the hydra, the many-headed monster Heracles was ordered to destroy as his 2nd labor. Seeing that Heracles was winning the fight against the hydra, Hera sent a large crab as a distraction. Unfortunately, the crab was accidentally crushed underneath his foot (in some tellings the crab bit Heracles, and Heracles purposely stomped on the crab). Hera thus placed the crab amongst the constellations to thank him for his service to her. That's a really high honor for such a minor role, right?
Crabs are crustaceans that usually are recognized by their pincers or "claws". Crabs are quite complex and they have varying behaviors. Crabs can be found both on land and in the sea. Land Crabs, however, do still need ocean water in order to survive. The ocean provides oxygen for the crabs. Thus, crabs contain this water by staying in cool or moist places. Some aquatic crabs also need oxygen from land to breathe, despite being capable of living in the sea for long periods of time. Crabs are non-verbal...they communicate more through their body language, especially through their pincers. Crabs are known to be territorial.
