Sports Mars

 Passion    Energy     Focus     Assertion     Challenge

For All You Sports and Astrology Lovers!

In our astrological chart, Mars represents passion, assertion, focus, energy, sexuality, and challenge.  The Roman god Mars ruled over battles and was honored  among  the Romans as a symbol of courage and glory.  Gladiators who fought in the viscious Roman games would pray to Mars to give them the courage to win.  Want to make an astrological chart to find out what your Mars sign is? In astrology, Mars is our challenger, although not all  people express this need for challenge through fighting.  Today,  most people may express this energy  through SPORTS.   The SPORTS field is our modern battlefield, in which people compete to win!

In astrology, the position of Mars in our natal chart can give us not only indications of  the kinds of sports we may enjoy, but also indicates the way we compete.  Mars,  like all planets in astrology, crosses through all 12 signs in the zodiac (as well as all 12 houses of the zodiac).  The signs and houses can give us an indication  of our competitive natures.

Below, I will discuss more information about astrology and how our athletic side is influenced by the entire natal chart, especially MARS.

Can Sun Signs or Other Planetary Positions reflect or influence our "Athletic" Sides?

Technically, the entire chart can reflect and/or influence our sense of athleticism.  Most people are more familiar with their sun signs...and it is true that the sun sign does have an influence on our "sporty" sides.  But keep in mind that our appreciation for sports can be represented by ALL the planets in our solar system astrologically.

What makes MARS so special? MARS represents our need to compete, our need to be active, and most importantly  our energy levels.   Thus, MARS will give us stronger indications as to how we will compete and what type of sports may benefit us.

What Role Do The Planetary Aspects Play? Houses?

Planetary aspects are invisible connections between the planets, that can only be seen visually on a natal chart.  Usually, the planetary aspects are determined according to the orbital degree of a planet.  When a planetary degree are in range of another planetary degree, they may form an "aspect" representing  a relationship between the two planets in astrology.  These planetary aspects have an affect on the way a planet will express, altering the natures of the sign.  For example, if a person has Mars in Capricorn with Mars aspecting a Moon sign in Cancer,  the expression of Mars will be  (like the moon).  Therefore, the aspects do affect the way a planet will express.  There are positive and negative aspects.  Oppositions and squares are usually considered aspects that cause setbacks.  Trines and sextiles usually signifies advantages.  A conjunction usually signifies a lot of power, whether good or bad.  A Quincunx usually signifies a very weak relationship between the planets (this aspect is usually minor).

The houses also affect the way a planet will express.  For example, If Mars is in the 1st house (house of self and personification), the native will show their energetic and competitive sides in public.  If Mars is in the 12th house (house of the hidden), the native will not show their energetic or competitve sides, and some with this position may not even be aware of their  abilities.

What Are Planetary Dignities/Debilities?

Planetary dignities will be mentioned throughout this webpage.  Planetary dignities is an astrological "ranking" system to determine which energies will be the easiest to express in a particular sign and which ones will not.  A "Dignity" usually signifies that the planet is in a "comfortable" sign position, which means the people who have a dignified planetary placement will express more naturally and comfortably.  A "Debility" usually signifies that the planet is in an "uncomfortable" sign position, which means  natives will be less "comfortable" expressing the energies of the planet.

A Domicile usually means that the planet feels "at home" in a sign.  This is the highest dignity a planet can have (+5).  Usually, this planet reflects a natural and comfortable expression, that is open and free.  In this sign of dignity, the planet's energy is much clearer than all other expressions.

An Exaltation usually means that the planet feels like an "honored guest" in this sign.  This is considered a good placement for the planet (+4). In this sign, the planet usually has a burst of energy that feels more purposeful but not necessarily more comfortable than when it is in domicile.  There is a sense of exaggeration with this energy, that promises more than what it really is.

A Fall usually means that the planet feels like "foriegner" in this sign.  This is considered a bad placement for the planet (-4).  In this sign, the planet has a lack of energy and feels more limited.  Of course, this position seems worse than it really is.  It is more of an obstacle to overcome, rather than a blockage.

A Detriment is usually the worst debility (-5).  In this sign, the planet will feel "exiled".  In this sign, the planet feels uncomfortable expressing or may find it hard to express at all.  The planet's energy is less clear in this deilitated position because there is a sense of distortion involving the planet.

These are the most prominent dignities and debilities in astrology.  Yet, there are other dignities and debilities traditionally.  Triplicites, Terms, and Faces usually reflect much smaller dignities, though they are not as effective.  A Peregrine planet is neither a debility nor dignity.  This kind of planet usually has no ranking (some astrologers say it also has no close aspects either).  In this case, a Peregrine planet is highly vulnerable to the looser aspects and house placements.

How Does the Ruling Planet of a Sign Affect the Position?

Every sign has a ruling planet.  Most people understand that when a sign is ruled by a planet that that would mean the planet has influenced the sign.  However, what people do not understand is the extent in which the planet influences the sign.  It is true the the nature of a ruling planet influences the sign it rules.  But remember...the signs colors the nature of the planets.  That means the ruling planet AND  the sign the ruling planet is in will influence the sign of rulership.  For example, If a person has Mars in Leo, Leo is ruled by the sun.  So, the sun will influence the sign of Leo, right?  Well, what about the sun? The sun is usually positioned in a sign as well.  And let's say the Sun is in Gemini.  That means that the native's Mars Sign (which is Leo) will have qualities that are more flexible because the Sun is in the flexible Gemini sign. (The aspects to the sun and the house placement of the sun will also influence the Mars posiiton in Leo).

So, you see there is a lot more to astrology than what meets the eye.  It is not a system that can only be determined by one position.  Everything connects to create the full story of each individual.  After all, humans are multi-faceted...and astrology simply reflects the depth of human nature.
