Planetary Aspects And The Influence Of Music

The planetary aspects in astrology are usually very influential when considering personal expression.  This is because while each of the planets represent its own characteristics, when connecting with another planet inside the natal chart it will sometimes express much differently than it would had it been on its own (a lone planet with no aspects can be considered peregrine).

As stated on other pages of this website, Venus is the most influential planet when it comes to our musical appreciation and expression. Venus is the planet of love, beauty, money, and the arts. Venus is the planet in our natal chart that reflects our deepest appreciation for things. It is the most refined and aesthetic part of us. As stated Venus crosses through all 12 signs of the zodiac, having both an influence on our natal and transit charts (natal charts are maps of where planets were positioned on our birth date, representing our personal expressions. Transit charts are maps of the planets most current positions, representing certain events that will give us opportunities or obstacles).   In both of these charts, the aspects are quite telling of how Venus will express its energy. But there are six different types of aspects that have the most influence: Conjuncts, oppositions, squares, trines, sextiles, quincunx/inconjuncts.  These aspects have a significant influence on how easy or difficult it is for a person to express themselves.  When music is involved, these aspects will give indication of how that person may express themselves musically.

There are some planets that will give more of a leaning towards music.  For example, when Venus is aspecting the sun, moon, Mercury, and Neptune. Below are explanation on natal aspects in a natal chart that may influence musical taste or expression.

Sun Aspects To Venus

When the sun is aspecting Venus, the native likes to be center stage. It is easy for them to stand out while performing.  They tend to be creative and identifiable when performing in front of an audience.  They are proud of what they do; everything they create is a work of art.  Criticism affects their self-esteem.  They want to be approved and admired by everyone who listens or watches their performances.  When the native has sun conjunct Venus, the native is even more of a dynamic performer; dramatic even. Yet, there is something so charming and graceful about their stage presence one cannot help but be mesmerized. This of course is the only major aspect possible as the Sun and Venus are usually no more than 48 degrees apart from each other.

Moon Aspects To Venus

When the moon is aspecting Venus, the native is an expressive and creative type of person.  There is something very personal about the music they create or perform.  They tend to be emotional and sentimental, with a touch of softness.  Both of these planets tend to be associated with femininity, so the women with this placement seem very appealing (and the men tend to be quite appealing to women).  This combination indicates a native that has a much more personal appreciation for music, for music is the window to their very soul.

If the native has moon conjunct Venus, the native will find music to be a channel for all of their emotions.  However, because music is so personal to them they will be very sensitive to criticisms of any kind.  Music is a means for them to express a very personal, vulnerable side to them.  If the native has moon trine or sextile Venus, the native will express themselves most naturally through music. Their music is creative and moving to the audience around them.  They tend to have subtle messages, drawing inspiration from their personal life.  With the trine, the native is even more sentimental than when there is a sextile.  The trine represents an even stronger connection between the emotional and aesthetic side to the native. With the sextile, their music and performance has a personal touch, though it does not leave the native vulnerable. There is a sense of balance or refinement about the way moon sextile venus natives express themselves.

If the native has moon opposition Venus or moon square Venus, there may be moments in their life when they compromise their own personal musical expression in order to meet the demands of the public audience or media.  They are much more sensitive to criticism than any other natives, and are more than likely to cave under pressure.  When they do express themselves musically it is usually highly creative, filled with emotional depth and subliminal or non-subliminal messages. It is important that these natives learn to balance their needs for emotional expression with audience approval.  If the native has moon opposition Venus, they will often find that their need for social acceptance is directly hindering their need to express themselves emotionally. They may go through phases in which they get emotional with their musical craft, but then they tend to retreat into the gimmicky and mainstream just to be approved.  This will cause both frustration and disappointment with their musical craft.  They are constantly on a road to balance. Natives with a square between moon and Venus tend to have conflict whenever they attempt to express themselves emotionally. Yet, when they do not express themselves they tend to come off as insincere or dishonest.  This affects their musical performances most of all, making it difficult for them to relate to others. Their musical expression requires innovation, creativity, and adaptability. Luckily, Venus is a benefic planet so these natives are blessed with charm.  They are surprisingly easy to get to know and sympathetic to the trials of others.

A quincunx/inconjunct between two planets usually means that the planets struggle to benefit from one another and sometimes get in the way of each other as a result.  When a native has this aspect between moon and Venus, the native may find that their emotions interfere with their sense of creativity.  These natives may be hard on themselves, and they may find it difficult to perform when they are emotionally tormented.  Often times, however, their musical creativity may also cover up their deepest truest feelings. As a result they may not express themselves to their fullest potential.  It is important that they make time to express both energies in their lives.  Flexibility is the key.  On the plus side, these natives always have inspiration and are usually an inspiration to others for their unique approach to expression.

Mercury Aspects To Venus

When Mercury aspects Venus there is a strong indication of lyrical ability.  The native is usually very poetic and expressive through open word. They may also be very good with body language, denoting a person who may like to dance. Mercury rules over the hands so they may enjoy playing instruments as well. Mercury and Venus usually may have only two major aspects between them because they are so close to each other.

When Mercury is conjunct Venus, the natives may be excellent lyricists and songwriters. Coming up with poetic and clever verses may be something they enjoy.  When Mercury is sextile Venus, the natives may have a graceful and beautiful way of expressing themselves, denoting a poetic leaning. They find it very easy to relate their music to others.

Venus Aspects To Mars

When Venus is aspecting Mars the native may be very good at the performing arts. They are full of life and energy, at the same time they know how to refine their movements in a manner that is graceful and creative.

When Venus is conjunct Mars the native may have much creative energy, especially in the performing arts.  They may be dynamic performers, with passion and sex appeal. Erotic dancing may be good for them.  When Venus is trine Mars or sextile Mars the natives will show a grace in their movements.  They know how to appeal their movements to their audiences. Especially with trine, they tend to have more energetic movements while with sextile the natives tend to express with a certain elegance.

When Venus is opposition Mars the native may find it difficult to refine their passions without their aesthetic side interfering with their passion (or vice versa). They struggle to express themselves in a tactful or graceful manner without completely hindering their energy.  This is because the natives are naturally self-conscious about their movements.  Balancing the approval of others while staying true to who they are is the road they are following.  Natives with a square between these two planets may have many conflicts with how they coordinate.  Timing is their biggest issue.  They may find they have to work harder than most to refine their movements in dance. They yearn to be appealing, but sometimes they tend to give too much too soon.  Then there are moments where they hold themselves back from giving their fullest. It is important for them to be creative and adaptable with their energies.

When Venus is inconjunct/quincunx Mars, the native may find their movements never please their artistic appreciation.  As a result, they may choose to exclude physical movement from their performances (even if it is frustrating) or to opt out of their own personal creativity in order to be free.  It is hard for them to express themselves to their fullest potential, making them feel like there is something always missing.  Flexibility and creativity is very much needed in order to smooth out these energies.

Venus Aspects To Jupiter

When Venus is aspecting Jupiter, the native will gain many opportunities when they are creative.  Even with the worst aspects, these two planets are benefic. That means together they will give the native many benefits.  The native will be optimistic about whatever they create, which may be the reason they may gain such opportunities.  Their music will reflect their philosophies on life; these natives may be great storytellers through music as a result, while still reflecting their lively spirit.

When Venus is conjunct, trine, or sextile Jupiter there will be many opportunities to gain physical and emotional benefits from music. The native will be especially lively and energetic as a performer.  They never let setbacks keep them down. They truly enjoy the arts, which is always evident to any crowd or audience. The natives with Venus conjunct Jupiter are especially enthusiastic. They must be careful of relying too much on luck to get them through performances.

When Venus is opposition, square, or quincunx/inconjunct Jupiter the native will also gain many opportunities but unfortunately the natives have a tendency to take these opportunities for granted either through overuse or procrastination. As a result, their creative potential is stifled.  They must moderate their tendencies.  The natives with quincunx/inconjunct between these two planets may often feel dissatisfied when they don't get the results they expect.  They should make use of the opportunities that are present in front of them (instead of expecting the grass to be greener on the other side).

Venus Aspects To Saturn

When Venus aspects Saturn, the natives will be more reserved yet disciplined in their musical expression.  These would be the best positions for learning a new instrument or performing a dance that requires discipline and grace, such as ballet.

When Venus conjuncts Saturn the native is both reserved yet graceful in the way that they perform.  They may sometimes be a little too stiff and may struggle to loosen up or try new methods (unless their planets are in air signs).  Those with a trine or sextile may be a little less reserved, yet still disciplined and graceful.

When Venus is opposition, square, or inconjunct/quincunx Saturn, the natives may have stifled creativity.  This will make it hard for them to express themselves openly with confidence.  Anything they create comes with hard work, and it often feels that they must work harder than others to appeal to critics and fans.  The ones with inconjuncts may especially find it difficult to be creative, as they often feel pessimistic and dissatisfied with their musical work.  They may need to take time to themselves to relax and simply enjoy instead of expecting perfection.

Venus Aspects To Uranus

When Venus aspects Uranus it means the natives will be changeable and innovative.  They are experimental on many levels and may even be musically rebellious.  For these natives, they never give the same thing more than once so always expect to see something new.  Uranus is a generational planet lasting more than a year, so natives with Venus aspecting Uranus will draw much inspiration from the ideas of those around them.

When Venus is conjunct Uranus the native is highly innovative and shocking.  They enjoy doing the unexpected and are constantly changing up their musical style.  They may need to slow down every once in a while in order for fans to adjust to their new styles.  When Venus is trine or sextile Uranus the native tends to be a little less dynamic, but still innovative and original.  Natives with the trine love to try new things, so experimentation is a given. Those with the sextile are more balanced and can easily blend new concepts with older ones.

When Venus is opposition, Square, or quincunx Uranus, the native may struggle to be as original as they would like to be.  Part of the reason is because of the strong need of approval from others, which hinders their need for freedom.  They may constantly be fighting with being pleasing to others and having tasteful music, yet wanting to stay true to their own visions.  They may need to be more flexible than usual in order to satisfy both creative urges.  With balance they can create music that is both original and beautiful, creating new masterpieces.

Venus Aspects To Neptune

When Venus aspects Neptune, its higher octave, the native has a tendency to be musically inclined to almost an exalted state.  The native can mesmerize and hypnotize with their musical expressions and performances.  They are painters in song form.  They have the deepest appreciation for music from almost a spiritual or abstract point of view.  Many with this aspect tend to either deeply understand the feelings of their audience or lose touch with their surroundings. Neptune is a generational planet lasting more than a year, so natives with Venus aspecting Neptune will draw much inspiration from the ideas of those around them.

Natives with Venus conjunct Neptune are especially musically in tune.  They are sensitive to the audience, always concerned with what will appeal their audience.  They can spend hours on hours creating or performing masterpieces.  They have a well of imagination and creative vision.  Many times they will become the vision of someone else's art.  While most times they do not mind this, it is important that they are careful that they are not exploited or taken advantage of. Natives with a trine or sextile between these two planets are also highly creative.  Those with a trine here will be especially expressive and in tune wih their audience's feelings.  Those with the sextile tend to blend abstract concepts gracefully in a way that relates to those around them.

Natives with Venus opposition or square Neptune have a tendency to be easily captivated by the glory of money and fame that musical creativity can offer them.  They must be very careful not to be victims of musical exploitation or that they do not let others bully them into hindering their own musical expression.  These natives desire approval greatly and they may lose who they are while trying to please everyone.  They have much creative potential so they should be careful not to waste it.  There may be a tendency for creative roadblocks.  They tend to draw inspiration from the world around them, which can be useful for balancing their energies.  The natives with quincunx/inconjuncts between these two planets may find that their creative energy always meets roadblocks. There is constant dissatisfaction with their musical creativity, making it hard for them to simply enjoy it. They want to be pleasing, but their imagination often is too abstract for those around them.  They need to find creative ways to express both energies without them interfering.

Venus Aspects To Pluto

Whenever Venus aspects Pluto, there is intensity, passion, and yet magnetism that is present with the native's musical expression.  There is a certain charisma that draws other in and makes them energized.  These natives have a creativity that can influence crowds for better or worse.  It is easy for others to be obsessed with their craft, but it is also easy for the native to gain an obsession with their own musical craft.  The power that comes from their influence can be addicting, so its best not to allow it to get inside the psyche of the individual. Pluto is a generational planet lasting more than a year, so natives with Venus aspecting Pluto will draw much inspiration from the ideas of those around them.

When Venus is conjunct Pluto, there is an unmistakable intensity.  The native may consume themselves with their musical craft, and may at times get carried away.  They won't be mocked and may feel slighted at any sort of criticism.  With them, either you like it or you don't.  They may need to reevaluate themselves musically on many occasions, as they have a tendency to feel dissatisfied when their music no longer serves them any purpose.  They may go into hiatus in order to find inspiration again.

When Venus is trine or sextile Pluto, there is much more balance added with the influential powers of Pluto.  The natives with a trine have stage charisma that can seduce a crowd.  They are captivating and engaging the moment they perform.  Natives with sextile have a healthy understanding of their influential powers.  They are usually careful not to take things too far, but understand what makes the audience's heart pound.

When Venus is opposition, square, or quincunx Pluto, the native will find it difficult to moderate their intense energies.  They tend to take things too far even, especially those with a square aspect.  Those with an opposition find it difficult to express their intensity without losing the approval of their audience.  Those with a quincunx/inconjunct here may find that refined energies leave them vulnerable or their own intensity may interfere with their creative potential.  A lot of energy is stifled as a result of conflicting desires, and so they must work hard to showcase their intensity while still staying true to their creative visions.  Otherwise, they may always feel incomplete or dissatisfied with anything they create and so will their audience.

The Twelve Houses Of The Zodiac

The twelve houses of the zodiac also have indicators of musical abilities.  Keeping in mind that Venus has the strongest influence when it comes to musical ability or appreciation, Venus has its strongest musical influences in the 1st house, 2nd house, 3rd house, 5th house, 6th house, and 10th house.  Yet, when Venus crosses through all the houses it can give a variety of inspirations.

When Venus is in the 1st house, the native interested in music may display a fascination with the musical or performing arts.  Music is considered an expression of the individual here in which the native sees music as apart of their identity.

When Venus is in the 2nd house, a native interested in music will value it strongly.  They may collect items regarding their musical appreciations.  Or they may see their musical talents as a reflection of their self worth.  They may even wish to gain money from their musical crafts.

When Venus is in the 3rd house, the natives that are interested in music may communicate well through music.  They may have a naturally breathy voice. They may also make beautiful or poetic song writers as well.

When Venus is in the 4th house, a native interested in music will draw their inspiration from their homeland, family, or background.  Their interest in music may have even been inspired from family members.

When Venus is in the 5th house, a native interested in music will enjoy being creative with music.  The 5th house is the house of amusements and creativity.  They may not care to make a career out of the musical arts (unless aspects, house cusps, and other planetary placements reveal otherwise), but they create music or perform as a hobby.

When Venus is in the 6th house, a native interested in music may want to work at a job that is music related.  Their job tasks may consist of performing or songwriting.

When Venus is in the 7th house, a native interested in music may enjoy working with others to create masterpieces.  This is a position perfect for duets. They love to please and so they are careful that whatever they create will appeal to those around them.  They may find themselves attracted to people that are musically gifted.

When Venus is in the 8th house, a native interested in music may see music as a resource.  They may do well in the music industry as they know how to exploit their talents and musical craft without losing respect.  They must be careful of signing contracts that limit their sense of creativity, especially if their Venus is debilitated.

When Venus is in the 9th house, a native interested in music may draw inspiration from different foreign cultures.  They may even travel for musical inspiration.  The native's creativity is influenced by their thoughts and opinions, so they may develop musical content that reflects those things.  This is the position for traveling minstrels.  These natives may enjoy touring the world and performing for various audiences, and if Jupiter is there along with Venus especially, they may get many opportunities to do so.

When Venus is in the 10th house, a native interested in music may be inclined to a career in the music industry and performing arts.  With planets like the sun, Jupiter, or Neptune there with Venus, there may even be a chance for fame involving musical creativity.

When Venus is in the 11th house, a native interested in music may enjoy being involved in organizations or groups that promote the musical or performing arts.  They may be active members of an art guild or club.  They may develop their interest in music from the friends or associates around them.  This position is perfect for someone interested in being in a choir or band.  They may find musical inspiration from a social cause.

When Venus is in the 12th house, a native interested in music will hide their talents and abilities behind a lamp shade.  It may be good for them to find a creative channel in which to express their energies.  If their Venus is in an extroverted sign, it is even more pertinent that they find a way to express themselves musically to others. After all, planets in extroverted signs have an inner need for attention and admiration so finding channels for expression is important. These natives may find their musical inspiration from their pain or insecurities, things they would normally hide from the world. Music is a form of healing for these types of natives. They may also find musical inspiration from their dreams.   Native with Venus in the 12th house may perform better in groups, where they gain more confidence.  They must be careful of letting others get the credit for their work as they have the tendency to do.
